Eric and Roberta
Getting Engaged at Linville Falls, North Carolina
Wedding
Date: Saturday, March 10, 2007
Destination:
Maya Riviera, Mexico
About
us:
Eric
and Roberta presently work (and share a cubical!) for the
City of Miami Beach's Department of
Tourism and Cultural Development, however, both have worked
in the performing arts for years. Roberta was born in
Birmingham , Alabama , the daughter of Geri, a professional classical
singer, and Robert, a professional classical violist and conductor.
Roberta graduated from Alabama School of Fine Arts and Florida
State University as a Dance Major where she received her BFA and
MFA degrees. She has danced professionally all over the
United States and has lived in Miami , NYC, North Carolina and
Austin , Texas . Eric, born in Long Island , New York ,
and son of Art and Phyllis, is a professional Lighting Designer
for Ballet Gamonet and other regional performing arts organizations. Eric's
work has taken him to Europe, Asia and South America . A graduate
of Florida State University with a BA in Theater, Eric was
co-founder of the critically acclaimed Acme
Acting Company in Miami . He has acted, directed
and designed sets throughout his professional career. Eric
is the proud father of 12 year old daughter, Celestial Tost-Fliss,
who is following her father’s theatrical footsteps as a Drama
Major at BAK Middle School of the Arts. Both Eric and Roberta
enjoy the outdoors, cycling, baseball, FSU football and classic films.
How we met:
Originally
Roberta and Eric met in Miami Beach in 1991, while Roberta was
performing with
Houlihan
and Dancers and Eric was the company's Lighting Designer.
They were very interested
in
each other at the time, however their lives were headed in
different directions. Eric later tried to follow up with Roberta
after their brief meeting. However, Roberta was in the process
of moving to North Carolina and they never had the opportunity
to speak again. 12 years later Roberta had moved back to
Miami
Beach and happened to attend a concert in the very same theater
in which she and Eric had first met. She immediately
recognized Eric and introduced herself. And, as if it was
only yesterday, they immediately hit it off and began their friendship.
How
we got engaged:
While
preparing for their vacation this past August in the mountains
of North Carolina , Eric,
due
to the airline's strict Code Orange Traveler Alert regulations,
managed to sneak the engagement
ring
into his luggage without Roberta knowing. He chose
to do this rather than run the risk of having the airport's
TSA ruin the surprise by examining the ring box during the
flight's security check in. A couple of days into their vacation,
they set out on a day long hike in the Linville Falls
area. Eric planned to propose to Roberta at one of the trails'
beautiful scenic overlooks. As they approached the first overlook
they were greeted by the smell of a big fat cheap cigar and a
man the size of a brown bear; killing any opportunity for
Eric's romantic proposal. At the second overlook, numerous tourists
and spitting rain again worked against the possibility of a romantic
proposal. Tired and hungry, Roberta and Eric retreated back to
town for a tasty Mexican lunch. After lunch, determined and fed,
Eric and Roberta set back out to Linville Falls to
hike and explore more scenic overlooks. This time luck was on
Eric's (and Roberta's) side. The sun broke through
the rain clouds just as they reached the most romantic and
spectacular of the overlooks. And, no one was in sight!
Eric slipped the Black Tahitian Pearl engagement ring out of his
hiking shorts and proposed to a startled Roberta. As luck would
have it a few minutes later a couple of tourists arrived in time
to capture the moment with the camera. We've posted
this photo on the website.
